First Age (Elder Days)

  1. Began with the creation of the world by Iluvatar.
  2. Iluvatar then made the first people, the elves.

  3. Aule, a Vala (basically an angel) does not want to wait for Man to be created, so he makes his own race, the dwarves.

  4. Morgoth, the first evil of the world, rises up and destroys the Two Trees, places of power and light.

  5. The Silmarils are made, which contain the last light of the Two Trees.
  6. Morgoth wages war in order to obtain the Silmarils.
  7. Morgoth is defeated.
  8. The sun is created and rises for the first time when Morgoth is defeated, leading to a peaceful time known as the “Years of the Sun.” (65,390 years)
  9. The Afterborn, Men, are created by Iluvatar at the beginning of the “Years of the Sun.”

Second Age
  1. Morgoth, the great evil, is forever banished into the Void.
  2. Numenor, an island, is created as a safe-haven for men, and becomes a great kingdom.
  3. Sauron, one of Morgoth’s henchman, rises up and becomes the second great evil, creating the Rings of Power, gifts to Man, Elves, and Dwarves, but creates the evil One Ring for himself in order to control those who wear the other rings.

  4. Sauron destroys Numenor, and man falls.
  5. Sauron is destroyed by the final alliance of the Elves and Men.

Third Age
  1. The Elves and Men break their alliance, and many elves flee Middle-Earth to Valinor, a place only for the elves.
  2. Very few elves remain in Middle-Earth and Men take control.  
  3. The human kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor rule Middle-Earth.
  4. Dwarves prosper, but Smaug comes and destroys their kingdom, leaving the Dwarven race weak and scattered.
  5. Theses kingdoms decline and Sauron, who was thought dead, rises up again.
  6. Sauron corrupts Sauroman, a wizard, and creates an army of Orcs.

  7. Frodo and Sam travel to Mordor, Sauron’s land, and destroy the One Ring, destroying Sauron for good.

Fourth Age-Present Time
  1. The Age of Man arrives, and Aragon takes his place as ruler of Middle-Earth.

  2. Elves become great once again, but do not reach their former glory. Elves still continue to flee to Valinor.
  3. Dwarves begin to prosper again, like they did during the Third Age.
  4. Orcs and Trolls flee to the far east.  However, small Orc-cults are founded.
  5. Dwarven women become few, and so the Dwarven race dwindles.
